7-Day Mt. Kilimanjaro Rongai Route (Driest Route)

The 7-Day Rongai Route trek offers a unique northern approach to Africa's highest peak, starting near the Kenya-Tanzania border. Trekkers traverse diverse ecosystems, from farmland and rainforest to alpine desert, before summiting Uhuru Peak. With a dedicated acclimatization day and a descent via the Marangu Route, this itinerary maximizes summit success while offering solitude and a wilderness experience.

This journey runs for 7 Days / 6 Nights on mountain (9 days total trip including arrival and departure) and features key stages across Arusha, Moshi, Rongai Gate, Simba Camp, Kikelewa Camp ....

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Arusha / Moshi

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), transfer to hotel in Arusha or Moshi. Afternoon rest and evening pre-climb briefing with gear check. Accommodation: Hotel in Arusha/Moshi.

Day 2

Rongai Gate to Simba Camp

Drive to Marangu Gate for registration, then Rongai Gate. Trek through farmland, pine forest, and rainforest to Simba Camp. Driving/trekking time: 3-4 hours. Accommodation: Simba Camp (tents).

Day 3

Simba Camp to Kikelewa Camp

Trek through moorland zone from Simba Camp to Kikelewa Camp, passing Second Cave. First panoramic views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Accommodation: Kikelewa Camp (tents).

Day 4

Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn

Shorter, steeper day to Mawenzi Tarn for acclimatization. Enter alpine desert, rocky landscapes, spectacular camp location. Accommodation: Mawenzi Tarn Camp (tents).

Day 5

Mawenzi Tarn Acclimatization Day

Acclimatization day: Morning ridge hike to ~4,500m, return to camp. Rest, hydration, body adapts to altitude. Accommodation: Mawenzi Tarn Camp (tents).

Day 6

Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut

Trek across the Saddle to Kibo Hut, base camp for summit. Prepare for midnight summit attempt. Accommodation: Kibo Hut (camping/basic huts).

Day 7

Summit Day: Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

Summit day: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak via Gilman’s Point, return to Horombo Hut. Midnight start, extreme altitude & cold. Accommodation: Horombo Hut (A-frame huts).

Day 8

Descent to Marangu Gate

Descend from Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate through moorland and cloud forest. Receive summit certificate. Driving/trekking time: 2-3 hours. Accommodation: Hotel in Arusha/Moshi.
